Smokeover Favoured For Auckland Tonight
“The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND. Smokeover and Swartz Pete are given great chances of taking the T.A.B. double races ori the opening night of the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting at Alexandra Park tonight The field for the first leg, the Otahuhu Handicap, is pretty even, Smokeover apart. There is sure to be solid backing for the Anarca DirectGolcourt bracket, Oakhampton and Bobbinet Smokeover has been racing in fine style but without any luck. At his last appearance he gave an outstanding performance to finish fourth in the Cambridge Flying Mile on January 5. It was won in New Zealand record time by Orbiter, which is scheduled to leave for the United States shortly. Shaping Well Golcourt has been shaping well lately and R. Purdon’s other candidate, Anarca Direct would also have good prospects if she began correctly. Oakhampton has such a great record at Alexandra Park that he is sure to have a big following. He is be-
ginning much better these days and will be a formidable proposition if reasonably handy at the home turn. A highlight of the night will be a meeting of the fine three-year-old, Tobias, and several up-and-coming young pacers in the Massey Memorial Challenge Stakes. Notable among them are Amend, Stronghold and Victoria, jdl of which have shown splendid form in their latest starts. Record Breaker Swartz Pete broke the New Zealand winning record for 11 furlongs the last time he raced at Alexandra Park on December 31, over the same distance as the Railway Handicap, the second leg tonight. It will be a major surprise if he is beaten. The only factor that could bring about his downfall is that he has drawn badly, but the race will be started with the mobile barrier and Swartz Pete has such brilliant speed that he will be expected to sweep to the front before going very far. The track will be fast. Selections:— 6.30 p.m.—First Mount Albert Handicap: Bronze
