Stable Rider On Warfare

The stable horseman, M. J. Skelton, will ride Warfare in the Craven Plate at Riccarton today.

His brother, F. H. Skelton, will ride Warfare’s stablemate, Palisade. Palisade, winner of 14 races and over £19,000 from D. P. Wilson’s Wingatui stable, had a setback in his preparation for the big cup races a few weeks ago, and today’s sprint race will be part of a lead-up to a programme of middle distance and staying autumn Warfare and Palisade did pace work at Riccarton yesterday. Captain’s Command was ridden by his Wingatui trainer, A. I. Powell, in striding work. This good three-year-old

looks fit for his Riccarton programme and considerably strengthens the chance of a southern victory in the second leg of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double.

Castle Flight, another Wingatui-trained runner in the Craven Plate, was ridden by his race rider, E. G. Low, in an easy race over three furlongs on the plough yesterday. He recorded 40 Lssec. Castle Flight run both open sprints at the C.J.C. summer meeting last year.

M. J. Skelton has been engaged to ride Pease and Tres Vite, runners for R. Heasley’s stable in minor races today. He will also ride Helen’s Bay in the Post Handicap. C. S. Jones came north with All Mac and Ski, two members of A. E. Didham’s team, and will ride them both today. Additional riding engagements announced yesterday for the Auckland jockey, G. F. Hughes, were Coseta in the Lyttelton Hack Handicap and Amicable in the Trial Stakes. Coseta won a maiden race at Oamaru at New Year. He is a stablemate of General Gilbert, Hughes’s mount in the Midsummer Handicap. Amicable, from W. A. Welton's team, has not raced this season.

B. S. Finlayson will ride Dark Seaman in the Craven Plate and Lucky Crown in the Halswell Hack, and C. T. Wilson has been engaged for Donnaway in the Post Handicap. If there is to be a surprise in the Craven Plate today it could come from Dark Seaman. Some of his form on dry tracks has been of a fairly high standard.
