SOUTHERN SPRINTERS HOLDING BRIGHT HOPES

Craven Plate At Riccarton Today

Southern horses will test Canterbury’s best in major races on the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting at Riccarton today.

Southland will put three form runners—Red Siren, Baal Hanan, and The Missionary —into the field for the £l5OO Midsummer Handicap.

Their meeting with the Riccarton-trained Standout, Chatsgay, General Gilbert, and Golden Vanity should ensure a good race to compensate for absence of class in this field.

Southern horses fill the first four places in the weights in the Craven Plate, and the combined efforts of the complete team if visitors in this seven-furlong Craven Plate might leave little for Canterbury’s best. Horses that have been brought from outside Canterbury for ♦' Craven Plate are' Palisade, Bellarook, Castle Flight. Warfare, Rae’s Hope, Carester, Vivien Robe, and Captain’s Command. Besides. Hushaway. which is generally considered to be the brightest prospect of the Canterbury-trained horses in the field, is owned in Dunedin.

Mr A. N. Smith, who owns Hushaway, must have hopes of an earlier success today with Pharasal in the Lyttelton Hack Handicap. This race forms the oncourse double with the Hornby High-weight. Grand Prix and Glenmorven, both from Wingatui. could give the southerners a good start for the day in the high-weight Fields with riders and form summaries appear below.
