STUD RAM FAIR Higher Prices For Wool Breeds; Buyers Selective
Top prices paid at the wool breed section of the Canterbury stud ram fair at Addington yesterday were in several cases hundreds of guineas in excess of the top prices paid last year.
A Border Leicester ram was sold for 425 gns—a price regarded as a record for the fair, and possibly for New Zealand—a Romney realised 700gns, compared with the top price .of 250gns last year, and a Corriedale sold for 325gns, as against top price of 310gns last year.
With the top prices excluded, it was not a good sale. With one, exception, no more than 50 per cent of the rams offered were sold under the hammer.
Buyers were very selective. Bidding was animated on the top sheep only, and passings were fairly heavy. Border Leicesters appeared to meet the best demand, for interest in them was Dominion wide. There were sales to Auckland, Masterton, Wanganui, Feilding, Nelson and elsewhere.
All told, 186 rams representing five breeds were offered yesterday, and 90 were sold in the ring. Border Leicesters
Although only 33 of the 55 Border Leicesters offered were sold at auction, the sale was a distinct improvement on last year. The highlight of this section was the sale at 425 guineas of a ram from John G. Gunn, of Braemore, Darfield. The purchaser was the National Mortgage and Agency Company, acting for Messrs E. A. Woolford and Sons, of Feilding. This price is regarded as a record for the Canterbury fair, and probably a record for New Zealand.
Overall, Mr Gunn had an excellent sale. He sold five rams for 920gns to average 184gns. Next best average was obtained by R. J. Low and Son, of Aberdeen, Highbank, with five entries averaging 67gns, top prices being 105gns. The average for the Border Leicester section was 83gns compared with just under 63 gns last year. Interest in the Border Leicesters was more widespread than any other section. Dalgety and New Zealand Loan, Ltd. purchased eight rams for a Wanganui buyer, and other Border Leicesters were purchased for districts as far away as Auckland and Invercargill. English Leicesters
Twenty-one English Leicesters were offered, but only eight found buyers at auction. The overall average, at 70gns, was a decided improvement on last year’s average of 43gns for 12. Top price was 150gns (80gns last year) for a ram from the estate of James Reid, Riversleigh, Darfield.’ purchasers were Messrs Bennett Brothers, of Riverside, Ashburton.
R. J. Low and Son, Aberdeen, Highbank, sold a ram for 120gns, the purchaser being Dalgeity and New Zealand Loan, Ltd., acting for the estate of William Jones, Masteriion. Messrs Low and Son gained the best average with four rams at 76igns. Corriedales The Corriedale sale opened on a high note—the second sale making 250gns—but it did not stay that way for long. Of the 45 offered, only 22 were sold in the ring, and the average of 135igns was 14gns less than last year’s average. Top price was 325gns for a ram from the D. L. Ensor Trust, Glenrock, Methven, the purchaser being A. J. Norman of Roxburgh. A. H. Kennington, of Seddon, sold two rams at an average of 170 gns, While W. R. and F. E. Booker, of Hawarden, sold three at an average of 141 2-3gns. Romneys
An interesting aspect of the Romney sale was that the average price was very close to the top price of 250gns paid last year. Sixty rams were offered, and 25 sold at auction. Compared with last year, the sale was good, for the average of 243gns was an impressive rise on last year’s 145Jgns. Throughout the Romney sale, it was obvious that buyers were concentrating on certain sheep, for the consignments from Southland, and some from Ashburton, met a very ready sale.
Top price was 700gns for a ran from C. R. Humphries of Charlton, Gore. The purchaser was the New Zealand Farmers’ Stud Stock Company acting for R. B. Hurst, al; ' of Gore.
J. D. and W. T. Robertson and Company, of Merryvale, Gore, sold five rams at an average of 423gns, their top price being 540gns, and D. H. Robertson and Company, also of Gore, sold four at an average of 256igns. Lincoln Of the five Lincoln rams offered —all from the Caythorpe Stud, Blenheim —only two were sold at auction, the price being 35gns in each case.
Thirty-eight Border Leicester stud ewes were offered in lots of five and six head. R. J. Low and Son, of Aberdeen.
