Opposition To New Works
The establishment of a new freezing works at Gore was not justified because it meant a fifth freezing works within 40 miles of Invercargill, a district where there was much broken-time for freezing workers this season, said the general
secretary of the New Zealand Freezing
Workers’ Association (Mr F. E. McNulty) in Christchurch yesterday.
The association's annual conference, that ended in Christchurch yesterday, felt that the establishment of a new works in that area would only further aggravate the situation, he said. Mr McNulty said that delegates to the annual conference were concerned that the establishment of further
works in the Southland-Otago area, particularly in an area where several works were already concentrated, would create a serious problem of off-season employment for freezing workers. The opposition of the Otago-Southland Freezing Workers’ Union to the establishment of the new freezing works, said Mr McNulty, was also based on freezing companies in the district installing and planning the installation of extra killing chains—equivalent to the provision of new freezing works. Delegates to the conference, be said, were deeply concerned at the amount of short time at all freezing works in Otago-Southland this season. The restrictions on the killing in this district this season did not enable the men employed to obtain a decent living wage.
