The test wicket-keeper, A. T. W. Grout, stand-in captain for Queensland, took a risk when he won the toss and sent Victoria into bat in a Sheffield Shield match at Brisbane yesterday. Grout became captain when the test batsman, P. J. Burge, could not play because of an injured hand. But Grout’s gamble paid off when W. M. Lawry, the Victorian captain, was dismissed for two, and the Victorian side was all out for 271.
R. M. Cowper compiled a hard hitting 96, including 14 fours, while the young fast bowler, J. Morgan, playing in his first shield match, took five for 55 runs. Scores: Victoria 271 (Cowper 96, I. R. Redpath 32, K. Stackpole 37; J. Morgan five for 55), Queensland three without loss.
