HORSE TALK
Area Trials The ChristchurchHurunui area of the Pony Club held trials last Sunday to select competitors for the next pony club championships. The day was perfect the setting ideal and although the cross - country course seemer rather easy for an event of this standard, every effort had been made to present an attrac-
tive show jumping course. This year the entries were down with only five starters in the Al Cup qualifying section. Of these, the most interesting combination was that of the winner, W. H. Rutherford, riding Cavalier. This was previously a very good horse trials performer when owned by A. Grenside and has been placed in both pony club and horse society championships. However, his score of 100 penalties was bettered by eight of the 20 starters in the Dorothy Campbell
section. This class was won by Mary Watkinson riding Aqaba. She established a handy lead in the dressage phase and managed to keep it throughout. Peter Thompson, with Flyaway, in sixth place 20 marks behind at the end of the dressage phase, put up an excellent crosscountry performance, scoring only three penalties to go into second place. Both Aqaba and Flyaway had clear show jumping rounds so he stayed in second place. Kathryn Waters, with the spectacular Master Simon, was third. Show Jumping The Canterbury area of the Horse Society is holding a show jumping practice day at the Yaldhurst field to morrow. Ths was originally planned for today. The aim of this day is to provide valuable competitive practice for those who will be competing at
shows on the South Island circuit.
Canterbury riders who will be competing at the first circuit show at Invercargill are Misses P. Austin (Tamasese), J. Cresswell (Drybread), G. Upritchard (Overland) and P. Nichols (Nellavale).
Schedules Schedules are now available for the show to be held at the Addington Show Grounds on March 3, 4 and 5. There is a varied and interesting range of events to be contested—dressage, combined training, show hunters, the Wilson-Innes Trophy for South Island area teams, the South Island jumper of the year and a teams contest for Australian and New Zealand teams too are some of the highlights. It is most unfortunate that this date clashes with that of the Amuri Jubilee Show but as the Hone Society dates were allotted by the North Island headquarters nothing could be done about it by the local area. However. Saturday’s programme has no classes for ponies or show horses so entries should not be greatly affected for either show.
