Obituary

MR L. E. A. FARRIER Mr L. E. A. Farrier, the managing-director of one of the largest contracting companies in Canterbury, ' Far-rier-Waimak Limited,' died last week. He was 51. In the last 10 years the firm founded by his father, Mr H. E. Farrier, has greatly increased its activities in the metal crushing, tar sealing, contracting, hot-mix and concrete fields. The original firm, FarrierWalker, began in 1919, carting coal and timber by horse and dray in the Christchurch district. Soon the business expanded into carting shingle out of the Waimakariri river. The driving force in the early years was the founder Mr H. E. Farrier, who died about 10 years ago. Mr L. E. A. Farrier, * who was then active in the business, took over as managingdirector, a post he held till his death. The name of the firm was changed to Farrier-Waimak Limited about 15 years ago. Men associated with the firm for many years looked upon Mr H. E. Farrier as the strong pioneering type, while they regarded his son, Mr L. E. A. Farrier, as the farsighted progressive man who rapidly expanded the company and its activities. For many years, the company ran a shingle plant on the Kaiapoi side of the Main North Road bridge, across the Waimakariri. About eight years ago, it imported a big crushing plant from England and erected it on Courts Island. Today, the firm has 23 trucks on the road, as well as much associated machinery. Testimonies to the firm’s contribution tn Canterbury include the concrete road from Belfast to Woodend, laid down many years ago. Mr Farrier is survived by his wife, Mrs R. C. Farrier and two sons, Messrs P. and I. Farrier. He was a Rotarian and a keen bowler.
