Southdown Rams Meet Better Sale At Fair
Southdown rams met a better market than last year when the Canterbury’ Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual stud ram fair began yesterday at the Show Grounds with the sale of mutton breed rams.
A higher percentage of the offering found buyers at auction and although the entry was well down on last year still more rams of the breed than last year . were sold under the hammer. The average level of values was also higher.
Ninety-nme of the catalogued entry of 102 Southdown rams were brought before buyers and 56 (or 57 per cent) of these were sold at auction for an average of 101 3/7th guineas. Last year only 46, or 35 per cent, of an entry of 130 were sold in the ring and the average for these was 97 guineas. But yesterday’s sale was better than this comparison of the average level of values at the two sales would indicate. Last year there was a sale of one ram at 875 guineas which was far ahead of any other sale on the day, and if this was excluded from the average it would have been only about 80 guineas. Such an average last year would put yesterday’s average level of values about 26 per cent better.
The entry yesterday was more in line with the requirements of the market than it has been in recent years. But even then passings increased markedly in the latter stages of the sale and after about 70 rams had been offered the demand fell away quite markedly. In the first run of the sale when more than half of the entry was offered, passings totalled only 16, but in the second run they jumped to 27. At the same time 36- rams sold in the first run averaged 106} guineas, whereas the average for 20 sold in the second run fell to 94} guineas. Top Price
The top price of the day went to the South Canterbury breeders, J. C. Medlicott and Son of Hook, Waimate. They had a sale at 450 guineas to A. D. Wyllie and Son, of Omihi, in conjunction with D. C. McMillan, of Irwell. The Medlicotts also had other sales at 370 guineas and 270 guineas.
Altogether eight sales of Southdown rams were made at 200 guineas or better. Apart from the Medlicotts, other breeders to have sales at 200 guineas or better were A. D. Wyllie and Company (Omihi) with sales at 270 guineas, 220 guineas and 210 guineas, and D. C. McMillan (Lochabef, Irwell) and J. D. and W. T. Robertson and Company (Gore) each with sales at 200 guineas. The Medlicotts had the top average of the day. Their team of five ranged from 60 to 450 guineas and averaged 244 guineas, compared With 135 guineas for four last year. A. D. Wyllie and Company were next with six making from 70 to 270 guineas setting an average of 170 guineas Last year the company averaged 130 guineas for five. J. A. Brown, of Oamaru, who topped last year’s sale at 875 guineas, did not have such a successful day as last year. Selling three rams from 85 to 150 guineas he averaged 127 guineas. Last year for five his average was 336 guineas D. C. McMillan selling five from 75 to 200 guineas averaged 125 guineas. A year ago his average for six was 116 guineas. J. D. and W. T. Robertson averaged 108 guineas for five making from 60 to 200 guineas. Last year their average for three was 128} guineas. And for four R. G. Richards (Waikakahi, Waimate) averaged 104 guineas, with prices ranging from 65 to 170 guineas. EWES A handful of registered oneshear Southdown ewes sold at rates similar to last year. There were 12 of these, all from J. C. Medlicott and Son, and making from 9 to 12Jgns they averaged lOigns compared with a similar number last year averaging 9gns. Only three of 13 South Suffolk rams offered were sold at auction. These made from 40gns to 70gns and averaged 56 2-3gns. Last year four were sold out of 15 put up for sale at an average of 52gns. On ihat occasion prices ranged from 35 to SSgns. Yesterday, top price of 70gns went to G D. Neave, of Meadowbank, Irwell. In the Dorset Down section four rams were sold out of seven offered and the average was 141(gns. Prices ranged from 95gns to 200gns and Darenal Estates Ltd., of Waipara. made sales at 200gns and 170gns. Last year the only Dorset Down ram offered was passed in at auction. Again a feature of the sale was the offering of the Darenal Estates, Ltd.'s one-shear registered Dorset Down ewes. Last year is sold at 55gns to 130gns. Yesterday 20 ranging from 70 to llOgns averaged Ssgns. A single Hampshire Down ram was brought into the ring. From R. A. Maxwell, of Feiiding, it was sold to T. G. Max-j well, of Motunau. Two Ryelands were passed In i at auction, but one was later reported as being sold at 40gns. A single Suffolk ram did not come forward. The rams in the entry were drawn from all parts of the South Island and also from Masterton and Feilding in the north. Purchases were also made for all parts of the country.
