Roman General One Of Best Trialists
An unraced two-year-old became one of the stronger fancies for the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Middle Park Plate tomorrow with a brilliant gallop at Riccarton yesterday.
Roman General, an Agricola colt owned by Mr J. B. DouglasClifford and trained by R. Preece, sped over haff a mile 40ft out on the course proper to beat Pango by four lengths in 48 2-5.
Both youngsters carried light-weights. A. H. Eastwood rode Roman General and R. Moir was on Pango. The Auckland jockey, G. F. Hughes, will ride Pango in the Middle Park Plate. If Roman General has early speed to match his rivals he should make a sound first showing tomorrow.
Of those engaged in major races on the first day of the, C.J.C. summer meeting Standout and Golden Vanity (Midsummer Handicap) and Hushaway and Bellarook (Craven
Plate) impressed more than most of their rivals in training yesterday. Standout (Stokes) and Hushaway (Collins) sprinted seven furlongs in 1:31 2-5, the last half-mile in 52 1-Ssec. Standout worked away from the miie and a quarter, but was not above three-quarter pace until fie joined Hushaway at the seven furlongs. SOLO RUN Golden Vanity (C. T. Wlteon) did wei! to run seven furlongs alone in 1:31 1-5. She wenl strongly early and slackened speed insiide the last furlong, recording 53sgc for the last half-mile. Bellarook (G. E. Lowry) had a good weight up while running bls half-mile, but he was very keen to Improve on his 51 2-5 It was an attractive final trial for the Craven Plate. General Gilbert (Kirkliet) was three lengths in advance of Early Dawn (Mein) and Hawkins (Swanson) was beaten off in a longer gap after running nine furlongs in 2mln 0 3-ssec.
Sabeill (Reuben) joined in at the seven furlongs, and led General Gilbert by half a length at the end. They ran the last half-mile in 54 l-ssec.
Red Siren (Lowry) and Chartborough (Taggart) ran nine furlongs easily in 2min 7 3-ssec, the last haW-miile in 54sec. Red Siren, a member of the successful Winsloe team from Gore, looks bright and muscular. FAST MILE Summer Lad (Low) came up with the fastest male of the morning. He held a big lead over Marlow (Daly) at the end and recorded Imcn 43 4-ssec after cutting out the opening half in 51 4-s Sec. C. C. McCarthy will try Summer Lad in a hood in the HalsweOl Handicap tomorrow. Fdsipar (Cowles) took Imln 49 2-5 sec for Ms mite and 53sec for the last half, but he had lots In reserve. After three successive wins in the last few weeks he is a prospect tor the Hornby High-weight. Chatsgay (Low), a lazy track worker, recorded Imin 56sec for a mine. RIVALS Pharasal (Stokes) had the outside running, but appeared to be going better than Time and Tide (Collins) ending six furlongs in Imin 15 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 49 l-ssec. These stablemates will meet in the Lyttelton Handicap, the second leg of the on-course double on Saturday. Other gallops: COURSE PROPER Seven Furlongs.—Silver Kingdom (Taggart) and Frolicsome (A. H.
