Joint Expedition Delayed

WELLINGTON, February 3.
The joint United States-New Zealand geological expedition to Antarctica had been put off till the 1967-68 season, the director of the Geological Survey of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (Mr R. W. Willett) said on his return to Wellington today.
Mr Willett said American officials were very keen on the joint venture but had other commitments for this year’s limited Antarctic season.

Although the expedition would be numerically small —two men from each country —it would cover a wide amount of territory. All travelling on the sub-contin-ent would be done by helicopter. Both Americans picked for the expedition were very experienced in hard rock structures. Mr Willett said New Zealand would probably need to buy an electron probe fairly soon. He had inspected one which was very efficient and swift in determining the mineral composition of rocks.
