KENNEDY DIVORCE
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SUN VALLEY (Idaho), February 2.
President Kennedy’s sister Patricia won a decree from the actor Peter Lawford yesterday in the Kennedy family’s first divorce. The grounds were mental cruelty. Mrs Lawford, aged 39, a Roman Catholic, was given custody of their four children but their father will be able to visit them. Lawford, aged 41, is a Protestant. They had lived apart for some time.
The Lawfords became romantically involved while attending the 1952 Republican National Convention in Chicago. They were married in the Kennedy family home in New York in April, 1954.
Mrs Lawford’s father, Joseph Kennedy, former Ambassador to the Court of St. James, was outraged when he first learned his youngest daughter planned to marry the British-born actor.
