CHURCH AID POST

Layman Appointed

The first layman to hold an executive position in the National Council of Churches took up his office in Christchurch earlier this week. He is Mr F. Heard, who has been commissioned to the work of inter-church aid secretaryOne of Mr Heard’s chief interests will be to try to increase lay activity in the churches. He believes that the very fact that he has been appointed to the post is an indication that the layman is coming more and more into the picture. “There is tremendous potential in New Zealand for the laity to participate more actively in church life,” he said. “I hope that I will be able to increase lay activity by organising more meetings in all main centres. Towards the end of the year, we hope to hold a Dominion-wide lay conference; no definite venue has yet been selected.” There was an ecumenical atmosphere about the special

commissioning service which was held for Mr Heard in the cathedral on Tuesday evening. Representatives of the Baptist Church, the Methodist Church, and the Salvation Army officiated at the service.
