HURRICANE DAMAGE IN WESTERN SAMOA.—Photographs taken after the recent hurricane, the worst experienced in Samoa for 40 years. TOP: The home built for Robert Louis Stevenson at Vailima in the 1890s. When Western Samoa was under New Zealand administration, this house was occupied by the New Zealand High Commissioner. It is now the official residence of the Head of State, Malietoa Tanumafili, who was in the house when the hurricane struck, but escaped injury. BOTTOM: The wreckage of a school built largely by village funds and labour only a year ago. Although villagers sheltered inside the building during the hurricane, no-one was injured when it collapsed.
