MORE SEEK WORK

Fewer Jobs Last Month

Job vacancies in the Christchurch district of the Department of Labour last month totalled 282, said the district superintendent (Mr C. D. Macan). This number was seven fewer than December’s. In both months, he said, there were more juvenile vacancies, associated with school leaving.

Last month, 62 men enrolled for employment, compared with 45 in December. Seventeen women enrolled, compared with 13 in December.

About 76 persons had been sent from the Christchurch district to seasonal work in the Nelson district. This was 20 to 30 fewer than normal at this stage of the tobacco, hop, and fruit season.
