AUCKLAND, ■ Feb. 2.
During the second day of the Lower Court hearing of 96 charges of fraud against Ronald Henry Baxter, aged 36, a car salesman, two witnesses alleged that signatures on applications for import licences were not theirs.
The hearing is before Messrs H. M. Israel and'R. S. McMillan, J.P.’s. No plea has been taken.
Sergeant I. V. Edwards is prosecuting. Baxter (Mr R. Li Maclaren) has elected trial by jury on all charges. Mark Meredith Williams told the Court he sent about £570 to Australia to purchase some shares.
“I did this because I heard a rumour around town that money overseas would qualify for overseas funds,” he said. He denied that signatures on an import application and other documents produced in court were his. Alan Carlton King told the Court that he discussed the purchase of overseas funds with Baxter and arranged to pay about £7OO to a broker in order to purchase some British bonds.
He also denied signing an import application, and other documents produced in court. The hearing is proceeding.
Last Hastings.—The last R.N.Z.A.F. Hastings made a flight over Auckland yesterday afternoon, before joining two others in storage at Ohakea. They have been replaced by the Hercules Cl3O. —(P.A.)
