Lyell Only Two-Lifer In Bowls 9 Last Five

The Beckenham player, J. Lyell, is the only two-lifer remaining in the Christchurch Bowling Centre’s open singles tournament.

After a further four rounds yesterday only five went through to play the final stages, on the South Brighton green on February 12. They are Lyell, and four one-lifers, R. Lulham (Christchurch), J. Dale (Burwood), G. Thomson (Fendalton) and E. Fox (Beckenham). Yesterday, Lyell won his first two matches comfortably, had a bye in the third, and then narrowly defeated Dale, 22-20, after a great exhibition of bowling. In the final stages, Lyell and Dale will meet again, and this should be an even greater struggle. Lulham’s Revenge

W. Newburgh (Elmwood) took Lulham’s first life in the first game of the day, when he won, 20-14. Then Newburgh lost his first life to Dale in a close game, Dale evenning by one point. Newburgh then went on to trounce E. Bromley (Christchurch), 23-5, while Lulham outplayed T. Dixon (South Brighton), 17-6. Lulham and Newburgh then met once again in the last game of the day when Lulham turned the tables, to win, 19-14.

Boon Eliminated

M. K. Boon- (Christchurch), an Empire Games representative, had a close call in his first game against K. Robinson (Rakaia), a finalist in a Maddison trophy fixtmfe, and won 18-17. Boon had no diffi-

culty in beating H. Wales (Opawa), 23-9, and then narrowly triumphed over H. Dacevall (Sydenham), 17-15.

But Boon's successes ended when he was eliminated, 17-4, by Fox. Fox had easy passages through his first three games, winning 22-2, 21-9 and 21-12.
