New Appointment For Detective
Detective Sergeant D. C. Lee. crime prevention officer for the Christchurch police district, has resigned.
He will leave the New Zealand Police at the end of this month to become assistant general-secretary of the New Zealand Police Association. The general secretary of the association, Mr J. Meltzer, of Wellington, will retire to-
wards the end of this year, and Mr Lee is expected to succeed him. The job carries a salary of more than £2900 a year—the equivalent of the salary paid to an assistant commissioner in the police force.
Detective Sergeant Lee was educated at Christchurch Boys’ High School and the University of Canterbury. He was admitted to the Supreme Court as a solicitor in June last year, and passed his final examination for the LL.B, degree in November. He will graduate in May and make application to be admitted to the Supreme Court as a barrister in that month.
Mr Lee, who is married, with three children, will live in Wellington. He joined the police in 1957, and has served in the C. 1.8. in Christchurch all. his career. Last April he was appointed the first crime prevention officer in Christchurch. He introduced the first nightly radio police report, over 3ZB in Christchurch, in New Zealand, and also the first police service for holiday-makers, successfully aimed at reducing burglaries of houses while the occupiers are on holiday. Mr Lee has also arranged for exhibits from the New Zealand Police Museum in Wellington to be displayed in Christchurch later this year. The New Zealand Police Force Association has 2600 members and represents all members in the force below the rank of commissioned officer. It was formed in 1936. Mr Meltzer, a barrister and solicitor, has been the general secretary for 28 years. The association has lodged an application for a review of wages and conditions for policemen with the special tribunal set up recently.
