BEST FOR 15 YEARS
Salmon Season In Ashburton Y.V Z. Press Association) ASHBURTON. Jan. 18. Ashburton fishermen are experiencing their best start to a salmon season for more than 15 years, according to Acclimatisation Society officers. Many big fish have already been taken out of the county’s three main rivers—several have topped the 301 b mark, and all have been in beautiful condition. The largest to date has been a 37 pounder caught at the mouth of the Rakaia by a Christchurch angler, Mr C.| Everett. Mr Everett caught the limit bag of six and four of them weighed more than 251 b.
The president of the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society, Mr J. W. Keig, could give no reason for the size of the salmon this season, other than they must have run into bigger and better stocks of food. Until this year, salmon In the Ashburton, Rakaia and Rangitata rivers had been getting progressively smaller, he said. “We have often spoken of the good old days, but nothing could have topped what we are experiencing this season—and the main run has 'not even started vet.” be said.
