DAY OF UPSETS AT JUNIOR TENNIS

Aucklanders were the principal figures in a day of upsets when the Canterbury Junior Lawn Tennis Association championt ships were begun at Wilding Park yesterday.

The second, third and fourth seeded players in the boys’ under-17 singles championship. all Aucklanders, were humbled during the first and second rounds of play. Second - seeded M. Price (North Shore) lost a threeset marathon to T. Kelsey (Wellington). Kelsey, formerly a Christchurch player, was inadvertantly entered in the under-15 singles and was lifted to play Price who would otherwise have had a bye.

G. Snook (Auckland), the third seed, was beaten in three sets by R. Colello (Nelson) while fourth-seeded B. Medge (Auckland) lost in straight sets after saving five match points. Strong, hot, north-westerly gusts made conditions difficult for the 400 players who come pleted 300 matches before - darkness curtailed the day's )’ play. •I Miss S. Bruce (Christ- '. church), who won the girls' i under-17 singles last year, was s defeated in the first round by i Miss E. Emery (Auckland). After losing the first set, 1-6,

she woe the second by the same margin but was not as consistent as last year. In the enervating conditions, only those players who came to the net generally won.

D. A. Parun (Wellington), the top under-17 boys’ seed, showed himself to be the best player of the day, against R. ■Arnott (Australia). Parun controlled the fore-court and blasted the diminutive Arnott off the court.

Only singles matches in the under-17, under-15 and under--13 sections were played. Doubles and under-19 matches will begin this morning.
