AUCKLAND. A move to have the May 6 deadline of Empire Games performances extended for New Zealand athletes in the northern hemisphere was made last night by the Auckland Athletic Centre.
A delegates' meeting unanimously decided that it be recommended to the New Zealand and British Empire Games Association that the deadline be a week before the final date set down by the Jamaican authorities. Their date is understood to be later than May 6. Athletes competing in the United States and in Europe have little chance to compete outdoors until early May, thus
I making good performances before the deadline al) but impossible.
I The resolution, put forward Iby Mr A. Husband (Lynnidale), was made to avoid a i recurrence of the trouble that surrounded the non-selection of the decathlon performer R. A. Williams, before the Tokyo Olympics.
Williams, after the deadline set in 1964, turned in a world class performance in California but was not selected for the Games.
The recommendation must first go through the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association.
Athletes overseas w'hom the May 6 deadline could affect include the hurdler, R. V. Johnson, and the former Olympic champion walker, N. R. Read.
