Finn First Across Alps In Rally

MONTE CARLO Timo Makinen (Finland) in a Mini-Cooper, was the first competitor to complete the gruelling 24-hour mountain run in the Monte Carlo Rally yesterday.
Makinen, last year’s rally winner, arrived on the front in Monte Carlo on time and reported he had had a troublefree run in the 862-mile drive to Chambery and back. Yesterday morning, nine of the 159 cars which began the run had already retired through bumps, mechanical trouble or because they were
! unable to keep up with the i tough time schedule. i About one-third of the remainder—some 50 cars—were reported to have been penalised. All the top contenders for outright victory, however, were believed to be still unpenalised. These included the leading Mini-Coopers, Citroen DS 21s and Lancias. On the 862-mile drive across the alps there are six special stages with secret time checks.
There was little fresh snow in the mountains, and driving conditions were reasonably good.
