(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Jan. 18. Only a small proportion of the more than 200 adults, many of them Maoris, in the Auckland province who studied School Certificate subjects at night classes last year sat the examinations in November.

Mr K. Osiborne, a 29-year-old Auckland painter "ith two children, attained a total of 228 marks in four subjects, his highest mark was 67, in commercial practice, and others were 63 in English and bookkeeping, and 35 in general science. Mr Osborne, who came to New Zealand from the Auckland Islands nine years ago. is a prominent Auckland steeplechaser. He took up his studies after being told that he needed higher qualifications for his desired job.

Mr Osborne was one of a group who studied during the year at Henderson High School.

Another night school student was Miss Kiriwehi Rameka, a New Lynn factory worker, who totalled 216 marks—6B in English, 63 in biology, 44 in commercial practice and 41 in general science.

The parents of eight children, Mr W. Ellis, a Maori, and his wife sat two subjects. He gained 58 marks in English and 31 in commercial practice, while his wife’s marks were 34 in English and 44 in commercial practice. Mr Ellis helped start the Henderson group. Colleen Bates, a 16-year-old Wanganui girl who cared for the Ellis’s children while the parents went to night school four nights a week passed her school certificate with 212 marks. A Maori woman from Hamilton, Mrs S. Munro, sat in Maori and passed with 73 marks. She said tonight that

she would like to go further with the School Certificate course, perhaps taking English and commercial practice this year.

Mrs A. Hapimana, also of Hamilton and a mother of two children, passed in all three subjects she sat —English, art and shorthand-typing—with marks in the sixties. Mrs Hapimana is a bookkeeper in an insurance office, and intends to sit bookkeeping this year. The Mayor of Murupara, Mr P. G. Murphy, was one of five Maori adults who sat the examination, from an original class of 36. He scored 57 in

commercial practice and 37 in geography, the only two subjects he sat. The other four candidates met with varying results but intend to continue their studies. Mr and Mrs E. M. Howell, of Morrinsvilie. sat the English examination. Mrs Howell, mother of seven children, passed with 64, while Mr Howell scored 32.
