EMERGENCY CALLS
1590 During Holidays The St. John Ambulance Brigade received 1590 telephone requests from the public for a doctor or a dentist between Christmas Day and January 10. The calls began slowly on Christmas Day when 10 requests for dentists and 17 for doctors were received.
The number of calls built up rapidly. On December 27 there were 44 requests for dentists and 86 for doctors, and a peak was reached on January 3 and 4. On January 3 there were 29 requests for dentists and 108 requests for doctors and on January 4 the figures were 28 and 99 respectively. In addition the brigade handled calls from members of the public who required opticians, chiropractors, chiropodists and the urgent dispensary.
Many persons also telephoned to ask what was the correct treatment for bee and wasp stings, cuts and the injuries suffered in household accidents. Also during the period the brigade also provided its usual emergency service for victims of motor accidents.
