Merry Morning May Win Invercargill Cup

"The Press" Special Service INVERCARGILL. Merry Morning, Majeur and St. Nazaire will be expected to dispute favouritism for the Invercargill Cup Handicap, main event and second leg of the double on the second day of the Invercargill Trotting Club’s twilight meeting tomorrow.

It is an outstanding cupclass field with most of the runners having shown good form during the holidays.

The first leg will be on the Flying Handicap, for which Tracey Hanover and Bill Adonis may be the best prospects. Rain fell yesterday but has not affected the track.

Merry Morning appeals as one of the strongest prospects in the Invercargiill Cup. Merry Morning graduated to this company when he won the Gore Cup at his last start on a heavy track. In his two previous starts he had a win and a second. His stamina could be the deciding factor. Grand Finale disappointed during the holidays, but is much better than that form suggests. His stablemate, St. Nazaire, will be one of the strong form prospects. He finished brilliantly for second after damaging a wheel at Winton.

Jockles is a capable front runner which won at Invercargill last month.

Majeur and Petite Sal will form a strong bracket. Majeur, after finishing second at Timaru, won decisively over two miles on the first day. Petite Sal has not been prominent in two starts in a fresh but has shown herself to be a smart race mare.

Southern Rev, which will be coupled with Merry Morning, has been placed in each of his last three starts on the holiday circuit.

Next Day completed a string of placing's when she won in dashing style over two miles at Winton. The Hal Try ax mare has previously shown that she is a useful stayer and, although she has drawn the second line, she looks one of the best prospects. Van Patch has wrecked good winning chances by failing to begin well. He will need to settle down before he receives any great support. Vauxhall Prince is another with his full share of ability, but he does not always begin cleanly. Omar On, on yards, is set a difficult task on the five-fur-long track. He won In his best style at Winton after securing the run of the race.
