Talked To No Purpose

(_V Z Press Association) DUNEDIN, Jan. 17. It's a cruel world, according to an Australian showman, Lester Mcßride. And he cannot be blamed for this view since he spent 113 hours talking but to no purpose.

Mr Mcßride spent several days in non-stop talking at the Waikouaiti Christmas carnival in a bid to break the world talking record, which was, he thought. 112 hours. He was wrong. Mr Mcßride thought the re-; cord was previously held by an American, Clive Jorgensen. but according to the “Guinness Book of Records” the record is held by Kevin Sheehan, of Limerick, Ire-

land, who talked for 133 hours in 1955. But Mr Mcßride is undaunted. “It is my own fault. I should have read the book before starting, but I didn't know it existed. Now I’ll just have to have another crack at it.” He feels he has let the Eastern Districts Jaycees down. They sponsored his last attempt, and he intends to make amends by giving them the money from his second chat to distribute as they think fit. But the second oration will not be for some time. Mr McBride will run a side show at the Dunedin Summer Show and is too busy organising that at present. The second attempt on the record will definitely take place after the show, but he is not sure of the locality as yet. “I feel confident I can do

it,” he said. There is no reason why he should not succeed—he's had plenty of practice.
