TROTTING Poupette May Atone At Hutt Park Tonight

Poupette, the beaten favourite and a contestant which did not get the best of runs in the Ordeal Trotting Free-for-all at Hutt Park Raceway on Saturday night, might atone for that defeat when she contests the Worthy Queen Handicap on the same course tonight.

If Poupette does succeed it is unlikely to be an easily-achieved victory. Flying Maiden, When, Seotleigh and Queen’s Cord are among some of her notable rivals. Each of these is expected to run hard for the honours in the first leg of the T.A.B. double on the second night of the Wellington Trotting Club’s summer meeting.

Poupette was competing under free-for-all conditions when she ran fourth —behind Flying Maiden, When and Seotleigh—over a mile and a half on the first night. This time she will be running a mile and a quarter and again is on the front mark. Seotleigh will meet Poupette on the same terms, but Flying Maiden and When will have to give them a start. Flying Maiden, which made much of the pace in Saturday’s race, will share the 12yard mark with Uteena tonight. If she gets a good run she should again take beating.

When was the unluckiest runner in Saturday’s contest. She received the run of the race, but could not get clear until the event was almost over. That performance dispelled any doubts about her present standard of fitness. Even from the back mark of 24 yards, her chance of victory must be highly regarded. Queen’s Cord was fifth—up with Poupette—on the first night. Although her finish lacked dash it was a sound run. Only slight improvement would be needed for her to be one of the major contenders.

Second Leg Fancy

Chequer Board, which won the Wallaceville Handicap brilliantly on the first night of the meeting, probably will be the popular fancy for the Au Revoir Handicap, second leg of the main double. Chequer Board’s strongest rivals generally are expected to be Buchanan, Southern Song and Trysail, the three principals in the second-leg finish on the first night. Buchanan was the unlucky runner in the Adios Handicap on Saturday. He was checked at the start and then struck bother again. Under the circumstances his second to Trysail was outstanding. Trysail will oppose Buchanan again, but this time he will have to give his Blenheimtrained rival a start of 24 yards. It is not an easy assignment, but he is at the peak of his form and will run two miles so should have every chance to work into a contending position. Southern Song’s latest record has been marked by consistency. His third on Saturday night was his fifth successive minor placing. Although some showers are predicted, mainly fine weather is forecast so the track should be firm. Acceptances:
