TAXATION REVIEW

Minister Wants “Full Data” (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 17. Full data was needed before a final decision could be made to hold a full inquiry on taxation, the Minister of Finance (Mr Lake) said today. Mr Lake said reviews of taxation had been made by a Royal Commission in 1924 and in 1951 by a committee of inquiry. Any further comprehensive review required a full study of all the economic issues and of the side-effects of any changes which might be feasible. Much work had been done already, which was essential if a large-scale review which would have any prospect of success was to be started. “This work could well be reaching a stage where it will be possible to advance the project towards the goal of a major inquiry. However, full data is needed before a final decision is made,” said Mr Lake.
