BANKRUPTCIES In 1965

Big Increase In Proved Debts Fifty-six persons, one more than in 1964, were adjudged bankrupt in the Canterbury district last year, the Official Assignee (Mr P. D. Clancy) said yesterday. Seven companies were ordered to be wound up during the year, whereas in 1964 there were only two. Debts proved against bankrupt estates amounted to £153,489, an increase of £86,921, but Mr Clancy said £66,813 related to companies ordered to be wound up, and of that total one company wound up towards the end of the year was liable for £48,275. Thirteen bankrupts and one company were each liable for less than £250, 16 bankrupts and one company for up to £5OO, nine bankrupts for up to £lOOO, another nine and one company for up to £2OOO, four bankrupts and two companies for up to £5OOO and four bankrupts and two companies for more than £5OOO. One person adjudged bankrupt in the Canterbury district was later transferred to Blenheim, so his debts did not appear in the local list. THE news that changes business changes every business day.
