HANGING HOUSES
Abolition In Valparaiso (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SANTIAGO DE CHILE. The hanging houses of Valparaiso, Chile’s chief port, about 90 miles from Santiago de Chile are to dissappear within the next few years in a vast remodelling scheme. Lying within the area scheduled for total reconstruction after the disastrous earthquake which struck the central region of Chile on March 28 last, Valparaiso and the neighbouring luxury resort of Vina del Mar are both to be extensively modernised. In the earthquake, over 400 people died, thousands lost all that they had, and 15.000 public buildings and houses were left uninhabitable. The first stage of the reconstruction work includes extending one of Valparaiso’s central squares, Victoria square, to the sea shore. This will be done by building a two-storey high gallery ending in an observation pavilion.
