TARANAKI DECISION
‘AU Whites’ Supported
It may be only a straw in the wind, but a decision of the Taranaki Rugby Union to support the sending of an All Black team to South Africa in 1967 without Maoris indicates that some New Zealand Rugby officials may have had some change of mind about the previous policy of “No Maoris, no tour.” Apparently the Taranaki union’s decision was quite an independent move. The facts of its meeting were reported in a Wellington newspaper when a member of the union wrote to refute a suggestion that no All Black team should be sent to South Africa.
Mr G. H. Geddes, secretary of the New Zealand Rugby Union, said yesterday that provincial unions had not been circularised for their views on the matter of the 1967 tour.
The whole question of the reply to the South African board’s invitation would be discussed at the meeting of the Rugby Union council on February 25, he said.
