The New Zealand Opera Company's magnificent production of “Porgy and Bess' had its Sydney premiere before a capacity audience at Her Majesty’s Theatre tonight. The production, staged in association with the Australian Elizabethan Theat.e Trust, has already appeared in Melbourne. After a five-week Sydney season it will go to the Perth and Adelaide festivals. A chorus of 45 Maori and Negro singers are appearing in the production, one of the New Zealand Opera Company’s major shows last year. The leading stars, the Maori bass Inia Te Wiata and the American Negress, Phyllis Bash, received a tremendous reception from the first night audience and had curtain call after curtain call.
