Drunken Driver Gaoled

(N.Z. Press Association/ DUNEDIN, Jan. 17. “I have never seen anyone with quite such a record of. offences involving liquor," said Mr J. D. Murray, S.M., today when he sentenced George Joseph Culpan, aged 49, a slaughterman, to 21 days’ gaol on a charge of driving under the influence of liquor. Culpan pleaded guilty. Sergeant A. D. Allum said Culpan was driving a friend’s car north along the main highway when the vehicle, on the wrong side of the road, struck a trailer being towed by another car.

Culpan’s vehicle then struck the towing car and continued on to meet yet another car head on.

He was arrested at 4.30 p.m. and certified as unfit to drive at 5.15 p.m. It was found he had not renewed his driver’s licence since 1961.

The Magistrate said Culpan had 12 convictions for drunkenness and had appeared on a drunken driving charge many years ago.
