(New Zealand Press Association) WANGANUI. Two New Zealand records, including one which cannot be recognised because it was set in a handicap race, were the highlights of the first Wanganui Games on Saturday.
K. Ross, a promising young Wanganui runnier won the open half-mile in the brilliant time of Imin 53.1 sec, beating the New Zealand junior record of lmiin 54.1 sec held by K. McDeli, of Auckland. Ross’s time cannot be recognised. Ross started from scratch, as did the second place-get-ter, M. J. A. McChesney, of Palmerston North, whose time of lmin 53.95ec was also fine for a junior runner. The other New Zealand record was in the New Zealand championship lfiin standing chop, in which Sonny Bolstad. of Raurimu, broke his own record with a time of 33sec.
Some fine, chopping was
seen, particularly from Bob stad and B. Herlihy. G. Lister, of Wellington, won the under-18 New Zealand championship highland reel.
D. McGonagle, of Wanganui, kept soaring higher and higher in the pole vault. He leapt 14ft liin his best effort and a Wanganui club record. The open mile went to L. Boosey, of Wanganui, in 4min 12,5 sec from 50 yards. The top cycling race, the mile, went to the Wanganui rider J. Mildenhall from 70 yards. G. Bing, off scratch, finished second.
Bing rode well throughout the day and won the five-mile race from D. Stowell, of Wanganui, and B. Goldworthy, of Auckland.
