BURUNDI CONFLICT

84 Killings Reported (N Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) BRUSSELS, January 13. Eighty-four chieftains of the majority Hutu tribe in Burundi were tortured and executed on December 15, according to travellers who have just returned to Brussels. The International Confederation of Christian Trade Unions today accused the minority Tutsi tribe of waging a campaign of terror aimed at exterminating the elite members of the Hutu tribe. The confederation claimed this campaign had been extended to the remotest corners of the country. It said the Tutsi were trying to wipe out every member of the Hutu tribe holding a leading position or certain social rank.

Burundi is a small kingdom sandwiched between the Congo and Tanzania, and was formerly part of the Belgian trust territory of RuandaUrundi. Since the territories have been separated, there have been several reports of tribal conflict.
