Scouts Brought In Prohibited Soil

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 16. A Department of Agriculture official today described the action by a group of Australian scouts bringing a parcel of Australian soil into New Zealand as “stupid.” Soil was a prohibited import. “We are not happy about this,” he said.

The scouts used the soil for part of a ceremony at the Progress Jamboree at Trentham last week. They proclaimed the North Island the eighth state of Australia in the ceremony. The soil was buried in a hole at Trentham Memorial Park where the jamboree was held.

The official said they had smuggled it in. “If they had declared the soil, they would not have been allowed to bring it in.” “This is a stupid thing. One would think scoutmasters would know not to bring in things like that.” The department would investigate the matter.
