G. W. Mein Injured In Race Fall
The Riccarton jockey. G. W. Mein, was injured in a race fall at Reefton on Saturday.
He was riding Wai-Ike, which fell when squeezed for room in the Mawheraiti Hack Handicap, the second race on the Reefton card.
Mein was unconscious for some time and was taken to Reefton Hospital to be treated for head injuries. This fall cost him the winning ride on Rae’s Hope in the seventh race, the Spencer Memorial Handicap, and his injuries, although not serious, probably will keep him out of action for some time.
He was engaged to ride Carester at Trentham next Saturday, but it is unlikely that he will be fit to take the mount.
Mein has had several setbacks with injuries received in race falls. He fractured his pelvis in a fall in a steeplechase at Riccarton several years ago. He received a bad break to a leg in a race fall at Oamaru about two years ago, and when attempting to make a fresh start at Greymouth several months later, he fractured the same leg again—not in a fall, but when dismounting after a preliminary at Omoto.
With Mein probably out of action, J. A. Messent prob-
ably will secure the ride on Carester in the £3OOO sprint race at Trentham this week. Messent has been engaged for Carester’s two-year-old stablemate, Anabel, in the Fitzherbert Handicap. He will also ride Alaska in the Wellington Cup, Oh Sally in the Pencarrow Hack, Solicitor in the Anniversary Handicap, and the Riverton-trained Golden Disc in the Camp Handicap. Stable Runners The stable horseman, A. J. Stokes, will ride Pharasal in
the Pencarrow Handicap. R. J. Skelton has been engaged for Time and Tide, a second runner for J. C. Tomkinson’s stable in the £lOOO hack sprint. Stokes will ride Shipmate in the Telegraph Handicap, and A. H. Eastwood has been engaged for Hushaway, an Anniversary Handicap candidate.
Shipmate and Pharasal impressed in a gallop on the outside of the course proper at Riccarton on Saturday.
Shipmate ran six furlongs in Imin 16 3-ssec. Pharasal joined him after a furlong and Mr A. N. Smith’s pair ran the last half-mile in 51sec.
Hushaway and Time and Tide were paired for six furlongs, and recorded 50 3-ssec for the final four.
