Tournament Won By Monowai
The Canterbury Softball Association continued its competition with a handicap knock-out tournament. A pleasing aspect of the play was that only two teams did not field sides.
Each team which received handicap points had to score a run to earn its points and some teams had the incentive to field well to hold their opponents scoreless. Tn the final of the senior womens grade, in an exciting game, with the lead changing throughout, Monowai had a stronger rally in its sixth innings to win over Avon. Avon, which received one handicap run, failed to score in its first two innings. J. Baker opened the third innings with a three bagger and scored when K. McCormick sacrified. M. Gaskell hit on in the fourth and with two outs J. Easton drove the ball, hard to the outfield to score Gaskell.
Avon’s only batter to get on base safely was J. Johnson, who hit a mighty home run. Monowai scored B. Makinson in its first innings on errors. Scoreless in its second, Monowai had J. Lee to score her team’s second run on overthrows in the third. Monowai failed to increase its score in the next two innings and entereds its sixth innings trailing by two runs.
With one batter out B. Makinson and C. Tennant hit on to load the bases and then J. Lee hit to the outfield. On resulting errors three runners scored to give Monowai a slender lead. Results:
