SUBURBAN MATCHES

The sixth round in the Suburban Cricket Association's competitions ended on Saturday. Waltham, by gaining a first Innings win over Beckenham, narrowed its lead to two competition points. Beckenham, batting slowly, had lost six wickets for 75 when a partnership by B. Davison and C. Ferguson looked promising, adding 40 runs. But both batsmen were out within a few runs of one another, and the side was dismissed for 136. G. Campbell was Waltham's most successful bowler. Waltham had lost two wickets before stumps. Burnside never looked like overtaking the Papanui total, being all out for 107 in its first innings. D. Gordon, with five wickets, was the chief wickettaker. Burnside, batting much better, had 150 for six wickets at stumps. M. Slaughter made a good 87. Sumner, after dismissing Merivale for 133, made a valiant effort to gain an outright win, declaring its second innings at 137 for five. This left Merivale needing 193 for victory, and it made a much better effort, with 143 for six at close.
