TYPHOID DANGER
300 Killed In Rio (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan. 16. Landslides and flooding after the worst rainstorms of the century have left some 37,000 people homeless in Rio de Janeiro and in Niteroi across the bay, it has been estimated.
Three hundred people were reported killed in the storms which lashed Rio for three days until sunshine and blue skies returned yesterday. The situation in Rio’s fashionable Santa Teresa residential district, where the streets lie under slime and rubble, was described as still critical. More landslides were reported in Niteroi. Officials of Guanabara State, which includes Rio, launched a mass vaccination drive to prevent any epidemic of typhoid, as the city authorities pressed ahead with the task of getting the city back to normal.
