Shark Seen Close To Levin Beach
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 16. A shark warning at Hokio beach, Levin, sent bathers hurrying from the water at 2 p.m.today.
Police used loud hailers to warn a large crowd swimming at the beach after a 10ft shark was seen just outside the breakers. The report came from Mr W. Rose, who was fishing at the Hokio stream mouth. He alerted the Levin police, who received earlier reports of sharks seen near the coast, but well off-shore. Swimmers were cautious at other west coast beaches. At Otaki, bathers were reported to be keeping close together and at Paekakariki a large crowd kept close to the shore. i A Paekakariki Surf Club
member said there were far fewer people than usual in the water. The fine weather attracted a large crowd to Paraparaumu beach. Pilots from the local area club kept a watch for sharks but did not see any. There were no sharks seen around Wellington beaches. Lyall Bay and Island Bay had few bathers today because of blustery northerly winds. At Titahi Bay on Saturday, a 2001 b 10ft shark, believed to be a bronze whaler, was caught in a set nylon net. Bronze whaler sharks are man eaters and the most common variety in New Zealand waters. g
