The President of Nigeria, Dr. Azikiwe, who is recovering in Britain from an operation, said reports of a military uprising in his country had come as a complete surprise to him. He said in a radio interview that, though he had been aware of the riots and violence in Western Nigeria, he had no idea that a military coup was planned. The news was a blow, not only to Nigeria but also to the Commonwealth and Africa, he said.
