JUNIOR RED CROSS
Leadership Course
Eighty-seven Junior Red Cross members will attend a leadership training course at Lincoln College for a week from tomorrow. The leaders and the delegates, who are from 14 to 18 years of age, will come from as far afield as Western Samoa, the Bay of Islands in the north, to Invercargill in the south.
Mrs A. Maiava and Mrs I. Tuisila, two Junior Red Cross leaders from Western Samoa will attend as guests of the Red Cross Society, Mrs Maiava being a foundation member of the Red Cross Branch in Western Samoa. Afterwards these leaders will stay as the guests of two Red Cross centres in the South Island and three in the North Island. Miss Janet Studholme, director of the New Zealand Junior Red Cross, will be in charge of the course, assisted by Miss Rachel Simpson, A.R.R.C., director of New Zealand Red Cross V.A.D.S. Mr C. McLennan, national secretary of the New Zealand Red Cross, will attend for part of the course. Seven former Junior Red Cross members will attend as leaders. Lectures and demonstrations will cover many aspects of Red Cross, public relations, meeting procedure, the responsibilities of leadership, with one day devoted to training in first aid, home nursing, water safety, and accident prevention.
A community service day in Christchurch will give opportunity to see the good neighbour “meals on wheels” service run by the North Canterbury Red Cross centre, with an afternoon of visits to Rannerdale Veterans’ Home and three homes for the aged. A concert party will entertain at each and there will be gifts for all the residents. Similar courses are organised by Junior Red Cross sections each year in many parts of the world. r
