THE THROWING CONTROVERSY
GRIFFITH IN ACTION
TN the post-war years there have been few more attractive cricketers than the former Australian captain, Richie Benaud. An attacking batsman, a magnificent fieldsman, a splendid leg-break bowler, a positive captain: Benaud’s contributeion io cricket has been immense. It continues to be considerable, for as a writer on the game Benaud has estab-
lished a fine reputation. He is fair and fearless, and he always has the best interests of cricket close to his heart. His latest book, The New Champions (Hodder and Stoughton, Ltd., 160 pp.) will be read •vith much interest. This account of the Australian tour of the West Indies last year must, inevitably, deal largely with the throwing controversy, but
Benaud, notwithstanding his strong views on the technique of the West Indian Griffiths, does not allow it to dominate too much of the story of a test series which produced some splendid cricket. Benaud’s description of the play is unpretentious, but thorough and of absorbing interest. He is a master of cricket’s tactics and his
knowledge of the game comes through splendidly. There have been few more interesting tour books than this one. The Trinidad cameraman, Roy Boyke, has captured the controversial arm action of C. Griffith in the series below. These are among a number of fine action photographs in the book.
