FIRES AFTER ACCIDENT
Truck Brings Down Lines
(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, Jan. 14.
A careering truck at Green Island early this morning began a chain of events which ended with the truck burnt out, a home scarred by fire, a power pole wrecked and a power black-out over a wide area.
No-one was injured
The truck, owned by Hoisum Bakery, Ltd., and driven by Mr J. E. Carodus, aged 27, of Brookville, Dunedin, went out of control on the Main South road at 1.40 a.m. After sliding on the wet road, it overturned, smashing into a power pole. Fallen power lines started a fire in the truck. Almost simultaneously, fire broke out in a nearby home —at 152 Main South road — owned by Mr and Mrs L. R. Pezet. The impact of the truck against the power pole had ruptured a gas main. Escaping gas caused the second fire. “We were woken up by the sound of the truck smashing into the pole,” Mrs Pezet said. “All we could see were sheets of flames stretching up the wall* of our house.” Mr and Mrs Pezet and their two children escaped without injury, and the blaze was extinguished by the firemen called to the truck fire. Power was restored to the area at 3.10 a.m. The driver of the truck was not hurt and was back at work later this morning.
