RED CREST SHOULD SCORE FIRST AGAIN

“Th« Press 0 Special Service AUCKLAND. Red Crest, which just lately has brought himself into prominence as a middle-distance runner of good class, looks extremely well placed to gain his third win in succession in the £1750 John Wells Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at Avondale today.

Nowadays it is very hard to win three in succession in open company, but Red Crest has won so easily at his last two that there seems no reason why he should not score again.

Since joining J. W. Winder’s stable at Cambridge Red Crest has certainly shown good form. Altogether he has had four starts from the stable for two wins and a fifth.

Red Crest, at his last start, scored decisively in the Nathans Memorial, a mile and a quarter, at Ellerslie. He finished far too strongly for his opponents and beat Blue Lodge by two and a half lengths. Lucky Son, one of his toughest rivals today, was third.

At his previous start, Red

Crest beat Sunset Fair by two and a half lengths over 101 furlongs at Rotorua, and the time before he was a useful fifth in the Hugh Dent Memorial at Pukekohe. Lucky Son, like Red Crest an acceptor for next week’s Wellington Cup, failed in the Auckland Cup and then finished third in the Nathans Memorial at the recent Auckland meeting. In the cup he pulled hard early and gave ground in the run home. With no true front runners engaged that might count against Lucky Son as he is certain to try to pull to the front. On the other hand. Red Crest is able to take a trail and race kindly. I Luckv Son worked well at : Takaninl on Tuesday. Any easing of the track would pro- ■ bably help him. Freshened I Clipjoint, at her last three starts has been fourth, twice, and seventh. Her fourths were in the A.R.C. Summer Cup and the Queen Elizabeth Handicap. In the Auckland Cup she ran creditably for seventh. She has freshened nicely since her hard races at Ellerslie and on Thursday she showed she has thrived by galloping kindly over a mile. Honourable won the event last year and judged by the I manner in which she has been I galloping in training this week I she could well complete the [double. At her last start Honourable finished fifteenth in the ! Auckland Cup. I At her previous race, in the

Queen Elizabeth Handicap, she was a good fifth. Ursinus, Misere, Lerua and Gina Lollobrigida are bound to run prominently in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Flying Handicap. Ursinus finished fifth in the A.R.C. Railway Handicap at his last start. Meanwhile he has done very well in training. The weather has been fine, but overcast, and the going should be good. We have taken steps to ensure that scratchings in future are published the day after the T.A.B. is notified.
