Deaths On Roads Now 13
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 14. Thirteen road deaths have been reported to the Transport Department so far this year. By this time last year there had been 11 road deaths.
A four-year-old girl was killed when she fell off her tricycle under the weels of a 10-ton truck in Whangakoko grove, Upper Hutt, today. Her father was driving the truck. She was: Patricia Eileen Douglas, daughter of Mr and Mrs P. H. Douglas, of 5 Whangakoko grove.
Mr Douglas was driving away from his home when the child rode along the footpath waving good-bye to him. The police believe her tricycle hit a stone and toppled over throwing her under the back wheels of the truck.
Chest Crushed A man is in Auckland Hospital with his chest crushed after being run over today by a mobile crane. He is Eric Frederick Noyer, aged 55, of 9 Baxter avenue, Mt. Roskill, Auckland.
Mr Noyer was directing the crane, which was carrying a large pipe, when he slipped and fell.
Hit By Rail-Car
A man is seriously ill in Kew Hospital with head injuries after a collision between his truck and the Dune-din-Invercargill rail-car on a level crossing in Invercargill today. He is Stewart McKenzie, aged 23. a farmer. A passenger in the truck, Kenneth Harvey, aged 14, was treated at the hospital and discharged.
Runaway Van A man standing in Nelson street, Auckland, had his leg crushed today when he was pressed against a parked vehicle by a driverless van careering downhill. The van moved off when its driver got out to unload goods. It bounced off two other vehicles, ended up against a building and was only slightly damaged. The injured man is Richard Holland, aged 42, of 17 Renfrew avenue, Epsom. He was admitted to Middlemore Hospital. Drowned In Pool A child was drowned in a swimming pool at the property of Mr R. B. Gibson, Kiwitea, Manawatu, yesterday. She was: Gail Mitchell, aged two, only daughter of Mr and Mrs H. Mitchell, of Perry’s Line, Kiwitea. The child was found floating face down in the pool. Missing Man Police began a widespread search of Auckland west coast beaches today for a man missing since he left home last Saturday for a rock-fishing and surfcasting week-end in the Piha-Muriwai area. He is Owen Clifford Lewis, aged 51, signwriter, of Northcote. He was due home last Tuesday.
