RACING Sail Away Likely Marton Favourite

“The Press’’ Special Service WELLINGTON. Sail Away has his final race trial for the Wellington Gup in the Marton Cup and for him to feature in the Trentham finish he will have to win or go close to it today.

A win for Sail Away, or for any horse engaged in an open race at Trentham, does not render him liable to re-handicap. The Marton Club has gauged its winner’s stake on the limit of £BOO, exclusive of trophy.

Hardy Cabriere is well drawn and well weighted to test Sail Away. At Stratford. Cabriere drew wide, raced wide much of the way, was not suited by the easy ground, and hung slightly in the straight. He has more in his favour in the Marton Cup. Lionheart ran freely in front in two starts at Auckland and came fifth each time. The winners were Grand Filou and Red Crest, both prominent in Wellington Cup discussions, so the class was not poor.

Awaroa took the eye at Wanganui and Manawatu, running good races each time without any luck. She finished seventh in the Adams Mile at Auckland at her last start against a first-class field after being in the fight from the top of the straight. Three Kings ran an improved race at Hastings and so did Narbada. Ichtar, at the same time, showed improvement at Wairarapa and was only a short distance from the winner Vogel Bloem after being put off stride in the straight. Hakawai gives every indication of running out a middle distance and she was still going at the finish of the Pahiatua sprint after stumbling once and being checked twice. She looked as if the race would improve her.

Corina is another coming from sprinting which looks as if she will get the extra distance, but she has drawn badly.

Last year the Marton Cup was won end-to-end by Kaupane. If it goes the same way again, Tracey could be the one. She is a front runner, fights on quite well and is

apparently improving in stamina with every race. Master Defence won so well both times at Stratford that he is the probable favourite for the McManaway Memorial, the second leg of the T.A.B. double. Bywon, a fast-finisher at Pahiatua on Wednesday, and

Wavering, unlucky not to get a clear run on the first day of the meeting, look the best of the others. Star of Kildare and Prince Hagen would be better fancied were they better drawn. The track may be easy. Fields:— 11.30 a.m.— ALAN MCDONALD HIGHWEIGHT, £350; Um.—Gayestephan (1) 10-9: Aorangi (7) 9-11; Dark Chick (6) 9-6; Paris Model (10) 9-4; Fingala (3) 9-3; Bonny Chat (9).
