TROTTING Cleome Could Beat Rivals At Washdyke
Cleome will probably dominate betting on the Rosewill Handicap at Washdyke today. In fact, she could be the shortestpriced favourite on the second day of the Timaru Trotting Club s summer meeting.
Cleome has compiled a distinctive record in a short racing career. She was successful at her first and lone start last season.
At Ashburton last month | she finished second when hav-| ing her first start as a six-year-old and last Saturday | gained an all-the-way win in i the Waimate Handicap. Although Cleome has gone back to 24 yards for her firstday success that is unlikely to prevent her from winning again. Two of Cleome's strongest rivals could be Deception and her former stablemate Russell. Deception was impressive in winning the Kingsdown Handicap on the first day of the meeting. He should take beating again from the limit today. Russell was the best behind Cleome and Tatsy Brigade on the first day and he gave them both a start of 24 yards. If he trots as well he should, at least, get some of the stake at his first start from R. W. Stockdale’s stable. Last week Tatsy Brigade was one of the long-shots. She will be at shorter odds this time, especially as she meets Cleome on 24 yards better terms. Glen Dee arl Iron Maiden, both of which ruined their chances by breaking at the start last week, and Mystic, a last start winner at Greymouth, are others capable of taking part in the finish. Now that Moutere Bay has dropped out of the field Indecision and Bright Highland are almost certain to dominate betting in the South Canterbury Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double.
The second leg of this double will be the Winchester Handicap in which Doug’s Choice, Powerful Light and Flying Over might battle it out. There will be a double for course patrons only on the Pukaki and Tekapo Handicaps. Queensway and Chief Command might be a good combination. The forecast is for continued fair weather so the track will be fast Fields:— FIRST LEG OH-COURSE DOUBLE 11.5 a.m.— PUKAKI HANDICAP, £400; 2:18 class; 2m. 0502 Admire (4) .. It 0800 Chief View (5) ..
