Power Game By Fairlie
(NZ. Press Association) AUCKLAND. B. F. Fairlie, of Auckland, trounced J. Mitchell of Canterbury in a semi-final of the New Zealand junior tennis championships yesterday. In a superb display of power tennis Faiiriie allowed Mitchell only 11 points in the first set and six in the second. In the other semi-final, O. Parun, of Wellington, easily beat D. Cassidy of Auckland, 6-3, 6-2. The top seed in the girls’ singles, Miss Beverley Vercoe of Auckland outclassed Miss Dedrdre Kerr-Taylor, of Auckland, 6-0, 6-0. Faiiriie, seeded No. 1, established a 3-0 lead in the first set before Mitchell was able to win a game. In the second set Faiiriie won all his service games to love. The steady, durable Wellingtonian, O. Parun, won his semi-final just as much by his
opponent’s indiscretions as by his own decisive play. Almost to the final shot, Cassidy was searching for his characteristic good length and from the first point to the clincher he trailed his opponent. At 10.30 a.m. today Parun and Fairlie will take the court for the 1966 boys’ final. Keen Contest
By way of contrast to the singles events, the doubles matches were keenly contested. Parun and Mitchell edged out the Hutt Valley pair, J. J. Barren and K. Woolcott, after an even match, 7-5, 6-4, while Cassidy and G. Eliott (Northland) came from 24 behind in the final set to oust Fairlie and J. Alexander (Australia), 3-6, 6-3, 8-6. In the girls’ doubles Miss Vercoe and Miss Kerr-Taylor proved too strong for Miss Sue Reid (North Shore) and Miss Denise Kerr-Taylor (Auckland), when they won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. The remaining mixed doubles semi-final saw Parun and Miss Vercoe defeat Mitchell and Miss Denise KerrTaylor, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
